IOWA TRADE CONFERENCE EYES CUBA

EVENT FEATURES GOVERNOR TOM VILSACK, LEADING IOWAN BUSINESSES, AND CUBAN OFFICIALS; CUBA POLICY FOUNDATION TO GIVE ADDRESS

Washington, D.C., December 4, 2002 – The Greater Des Moines Partnership will co-sponsor a conference titled “Cuba: A New Market for Iowa Food and Agriculture,” to be held December 10, 2002 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The event will feature speakers from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Iowa-based and nationally-based businesses with experience trading with Cuba.  Scheduled appearances include Iowa’s governor Tom Vilsack, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge, and the Chief of the Cuban Interests Section in Washington, DC, Dagoberto Rodriguez Barrera.

Brian Alexander, Executive Director of the Cuba Policy Foundation, will discuss “The Embargo: Political Analysis and Outlook.”  Mr. Alexander said of the event, “The future of U.S. policy toward Cuba is being driven by those who recognize the benefits to the United States of increasing commercial ties with Cuba.  This event is part of growing national recognition of the failure of the four-decades old embargo of Cuba.  Engaging Cuba is good for American workers, good for the American economy, and good for American goals regarding political and economic reform in Cuba.”

The event is being co-sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, the Iowa Corn Promotion Board, along with the Greater Des Moines Partnership.
